How to use MAGCO Dakota Flax
Flax can be incorporated into your diet in a variety of ways:
- Adapt your existing recipes substituting flax for the oil or shortening
specified in a recipe. If a recipe calls for 1/3 cup of oil, replace with
1 cup of ground flaxseed - a 3:1 substitution ratio. As an alternative, the
flour specified in a recipe can be reduced by 25% and replaced with ground
flax seed.Baked goods tend to brown more quickly if flaxseed is substituted
in the recipe so you will need to keep a close eye on the baking time until
you have tried a particular recipe once or twice. We have included a typical
recipe following this section that has been adapted to substitute flax - Banana and Nut Bread.
- Due to the rising popularity of flax, recipes are beginning to surface in current
health and cooking magazines and publications. These recipes may still include butter,
shortening or other oil in addition to the flaxseed. You can continue to adapt the recipe
using the substitution ratios if you want to add further flax health benefits.
- Ground flax can be added to your morning juice or chocolate milk - usually a heaping tablespoon or two
with your favorite beverage. Or you can sprinkle ground flax on cereals or yogurt.
MAGCO Dakota Flax™ is shipped as whole flax seeds in order to maximize
its freshness. A small coffee-type grinder can be used to grind the flaxseeds, either
for each use or can be done in larger quantities and stored for future use. Once the seeds
have been ground, the flax meal should be stored in an airtight container either in the
refrigerator, if it will be used in just a matter of days, or it can be stored in the
freezer for several months.
Adapting your Recipes to include MAGCO Dakota Flax™
We would like to share a typical recipe to show you how to make the substitution of
ground MAGCO Dakota Flax™. This recipe is for Banana and Nut Bread; the concept applies
to any of your favorite recipes.
- ˝ cup Butter
- 1 ˝ cups Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- ˝ cup Sour milk or buttermilk
- 2 cups Bananas - mashed
- 2 cups Flour
- 1 tsp. Baking soda
- ˝ cup Walnuts - chopped
- ˝ cup Whole pitted dates - chopped (optional)
Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.
As you can see, the recipe lists ˝ cup of butter. To increase the nutritional value,
eliminate the butter and add 1 ˝ cups of ground MAGCO Dakota Flax™, the 3:1 ratio. As
hard as it is to believe, it works! As an alternative, the 2 cups flour could be reduced
to 1 ˝ cups flour with the addition of ˝ cup ground flaxseed. It's baked bread rich in
texture and moisture. Just remember to watch it closely as it nears the specified 30-40
minute baking time. You can test it with a wooden pick to see if it's done baking.
